A Clean Install of Windows or "Reset this PC": Which to Choose

Clean install of Windows or a reset

When Windows becomes very slow, unstable or infected with viruses, sooner or later the question of reinstalling comes up. Modern versions of Windows offer two ways to do it: the built-in "Reset this PC" feature and the classic clean install from a bootable USB stick. Many people think they're the same thing, but the difference is significant: your choice decides whether the problem is solved, whether your files survive and how long it takes to get your working set-up back. Let's look at it in detail.

What a Windows reset is

A reset is a built-in recovery feature that reinstalls Windows using the system itself. When you start it, it offers two options: keep your personal files or remove everything. You can also choose the source: a local reinstall from files already on the computer, or a fresh image downloaded from Microsoft's cloud.

  • Keep my files preserves the user's documents, photos and desktop, but removes installed programs and resets settings.
  • Remove everything returns the system to an "out of the box" state, sometimes with the laptop maker's preinstalled programs.

What a clean install is

A clean install means installing Windows from bootable media created from Microsoft's original image, wiping the system partition. The computer gets a completely new system with no trace of the old one: no accumulated errors, no manufacturer "junk" and no hidden malicious components. Drivers and programs are then installed afresh.

A comparison on the key points

How deep the "clean" goes

A reset replaces the system files but works within the existing partition structure and sometimes carries over some problems — for example a damaged recovery partition or faulty manufacturer drivers. A clean install starts from zero and removes practically any software problem.

Convenience

A reset starts in a few clicks from Settings or the recovery environment and needs no USB stick. A clean install requires preparing the media, adjusting the BIOS and more know-how.

Manufacturer software

On laptops, a reset often brings back the maker's utilities, antivirus trial versions and other preinstalled programs. After a clean install they're gone — any manufacturer utilities you need (for power management or special keys, say) are installed separately.

Drivers

After a reset most drivers are already in place. After a clean install they need installing — Windows will find many itself, but for laptops it's better to get drivers from the manufacturer's website.

Licence

In both cases a licence tied to the hardware or a Microsoft account is restored automatically, as long as you install the same edition of Windows.

When a reset is enough

  • The system is cluttered with programs but not seriously damaged.
  • You're selling or passing on the computer and want to return it to factory condition (removing everything and wiping the drive).
  • You need to get it working quickly and have neither a USB stick nor time.

When a clean install is better

  • The computer had a pirated build or serious malware.
  • The reset fails with an error or doesn't help.
  • The drive has been replaced or a different partition layout is needed, such as moving to UEFI and GPT.
  • You want the cleanest, fastest possible system without manufacturer software.
  • You're switching to a different edition of Windows or to Windows 11.

The golden rule: data first

Even the "keep my files" option doesn't guarantee that everything is kept: programs are removed, and with them local databases, email archives, game saves and browser settings if they weren't stored in the profile. So before any kind of reinstall, make a full copy of your important data and a list of your programs and licence keys. Also check where the BitLocker key is kept if the drive is encrypted.

Why "not everything works" after a reinstall

A common complaint after a do-it-yourself reinstall: no sound, the touchpad doesn't work, brightness won't adjust, the printer won't print, the bank won't open and the email has vanished. It's almost never a Windows problem — it's settings, drivers and programs that weren't carried over. A proper reinstall covers not only the system but a full restoration of the working environment — and that's what takes up most of a specialist's time.

It's worth planning a reinstall rather than doing it in a hurry. Pick a time when the computer isn't needed for a few hours, gather your passwords for email, banking and key services in advance, and make sure licence keys for paid programs are to hand. Preparation like this turns what could be a stressful day into a routine job.

What our technician does

  1. Assesses the state of the system and drive and recommends a reset or a clean install.
  2. Saves documents, email, bookmarks, browser passwords and program databases.
  3. Carries out the reinstall from an original image and activates the legitimate licence.
  4. Installs drivers from the manufacturers' websites and the programs you need.
  5. Restores your data, sets up email, printers and banking, and checks everything works.

A real example

The owner of a café on Marjanishvili tried to "reset" the till computer himself because it had become very slow. The reset went through, but afterwards the receipt printer wouldn't print and the stock-control program and all the sales history had disappeared. Our technician found that, fortunately, the stock database had survived in a folder the reset hadn't deleted. We made a full copy, carried out a clean install of Windows (the computer had previously run a pirated build, which was the real cause of the slowness), installed the printer driver and the stock program, restored the database and checked that receipts printed. The till ran faster than before the problem.
