You're working or gaming when the screen suddenly goes black and the computer starts booting again — no warning, no blue screen. Sometimes it happens once a day, sometimes every ten minutes. Spontaneous restarts are one of the trickiest symptoms: they rarely go away on their own and almost always point to a problem that gets worse over time.
Why sudden restarts are a warning sign
A computer doesn't restart for no reason. Most often a protection circuit has kicked in: the power supply cuts out if voltage goes out of range, the processor if it overheats, the motherboard if it detects a short. Protection saves parts from instant failure but doesn't remove the cause. Keep using the computer and the fault progresses until one day it won't start at all — often taking neighbouring components with it.
There's a software side too: Windows is set to restart automatically after a critical error, so a blue screen may flash for a split second and go unnoticed. An experienced technician can tell a hardware reset from a software one by reading the system logs.
When it happens
- under load — gaming, rendering, compressing files;
- 10–30 minutes after switching on, once the PC warms up;
- at random moments, even when the computer is idle;
- when a printer, air conditioner or other powerful appliance switches on;
- after cleaning, upgrading or moving the computer;
- in a loop, right as Windows loads.
Main causes
The power supply — worn out or underpowered, especially after fitting a new graphics card. Overheating of the CPU or GPU due to dust and dried thermal paste. Mains power — voltage dips, a loose socket, no earthing; common in Tbilisi's older buildings. The motherboard — swollen capacitors or overheating power circuits. RAM and unstable overclocks. Driver and Windows faults that trigger critical errors.
How we fix it
- Log analysis. We determine whether the reset was software (a Windows error) or hardware (sudden power loss).
- Mains check. We measure socket voltage and check the surge protector and UPS, if there is one.
- Load test. We stress the CPU and graphics card while monitoring temperatures and voltages to reproduce the problem.
- Power supply diagnostics. We check rail stability under load and, if needed, connect a known-good unit.
- Component inspection and tests. Motherboard, memory and cooling system.
- Repair and verification. Replacing the faulty part, cleaning, tuning BIOS and drivers, then a long stability check.
If the computer restarts when powerful appliances switch on, the problem may be in the wiring. Our electricians can check the circuit and install a voltage stabiliser or UPS if needed.
