A memory card holds the most precious things: holiday and wedding photos, a child's first steps, a photographer's client shoots, dashcam footage after an accident, drone flights over Kazbegi. And those files almost always exist in just one copy. When the camera suddenly says "Card error" and the phone offers to format it, it feels as if everything is lost. In reality, data from memory cards can be recovered in the overwhelming majority of cases.
Why memory cards fail
SD and microSD cards are tiny flash drives working in tough conditions: temperature swings, vibration, constant writing of large video files and removal from devices mid-write. The most common causes of data loss are accidental deletion or formatting, file system corruption when a card is removed while in use, using one card across different devices, wear on cheap cards in dashcams and security cameras that record around the clock, and physical damage such as cracks, bending or water.
The key rule is to stop shooting on that card immediately. Every new photo could be written over the deleted files. And don't format the card in the camera or phone, however insistently the device suggests it.
