A hard drive (HDD) is a precision mechanical device: magnetic platters spin at enormous speed while read heads fly over them just a few nanometres above the surface. This design keeps data safe for years but is very sensitive to knocks, heat, power surges and wear. When a drive starts failing, many people assume their files are gone for good. In practice, information can be saved in most cases — as long as the situation isn't made worse.
Why a failing hard drive must be handled carefully
When a drive has a mechanical fault, every minute it runs can cause irreversible damage. If a head touches the surface, it literally scrapes away the magnetic layer along with your data. That's why the most dangerous advice online is "run a disk check" or "try a recovery program". Hours of scanning a dying drive often turn a recoverable case into a hopeless one. Just as harmful are attempts to open the drive, tap it or put it in the freezer — myths that have destroyed a great deal of valuable data.
The professional approach is to understand exactly what has failed first, and only then carefully image the drive — reading the healthy areas first and the damaged ones last, in a gentle mode.
Signs of a failing hard drive
- the drive clicks, knocks, grinds or beeps;
- it isn't detected in the BIOS or in Disk Management;
- the computer takes ages to boot or freezes when opening files;
- Windows offers to format the drive, or the partition shows as RAW;
- an external drive was dropped and stopped working;
- the drive doesn't spin up after a power surge;
- files or partitions were deleted or formatted by mistake.
How we recover data from an HDD
- Diagnostics. We identify the type of fault: a logical error, bad sectors, or a problem with the heads, electronics or firmware.
- Agreement. We explain the situation and give you the chances and cost. Nothing is done without your consent.
- Electronics and firmware work if needed, restoring the drive's service information.
- Sector-by-sector imaging. We image the drive onto a healthy one using specialised hardware that can work around damaged areas.
- File recovery from the image, including folder structure, names and dates.
- Check and handover. We show you the result and copy the data onto a new device.
If a drive has started clicking or disappearing, switch the computer off and don't turn it on again until it has been diagnosed. That's the best thing you can do for your data.
External drives and laptops
External USB drives are especially vulnerable: they get carried around, dropped and unplugged without being safely ejected. On many models the USB interface is soldered directly onto the drive's board, which complicates recovery. Laptop drives often suffer from knocks while the laptop is used on the move. We work with all 2.5″ and 3.5″ drives, including SMR drives and drives with hardware encryption.
