Firmware is the router's operating system. It determines how reliably the router holds a connection, how fast Wi-Fi runs, which features are available and how well it's protected from attack. Manufacturers release updates regularly, yet most routers run their factory version for years. We update firmware properly, so the router becomes more reliable rather than turning into a useless box.
Why firmware should be updated
Security. Vulnerabilities are regularly found in router firmware, allowing attackers to hijack devices, recruit them into botnets, redirect websites and steal passwords. Updates close those holes. Stability. Many "unexplained" dropouts, freezes and speed drops are fixed in newer versions. Compatibility. New phones, laptops and Wi-Fi 6 TVs sometimes work poorly with old firmware. New features — mesh, WPA3, better parental controls and VPN.
That said, flashing firmware carries risk. The wrong file, a power cut or an error mid-process can leave the router dead. That's why it's best done by a specialist who has the tools for emergency recovery.
When firmware work is needed
- the router hasn't been updated in a long time and is unstable;
- after a DIY update the router won't boot and all its lights flash;
- a provider-locked router won't let you change settings;
- you need features the stock firmware lacks: VPN, detailed statistics, flexible traffic control;
- the manufacturer has ended support but the router still works.
How we update firmware
- Identification. We pin down the exact model and hardware revision — firmware for a different revision can kill the router.
- Backup. We save the current settings and, where possible, a dump of the original firmware.
- Choosing a version. We use the manufacturer's official stable release or, on request for supported models, proven alternatives such as OpenWrt.
- Flashing over cable with stable power — never over Wi-Fi.
- Restoring settings and checking the provider connection, Wi-Fi and every feature.
- Hardening. We enable automatic update checks and change the admin password.
A router with flashing lights after a failed update can usually be saved: we restore the firmware through the emergency recovery mode (TFTP, recovery) or via the service port on the board.
Alternative firmware — who is it for?
For advanced users and small offices, alternative firmware unlocks the capabilities of professional equipment: several isolated networks, a VPN server for remote work, network-wide ad blocking and detailed per-device statistics. We'll tell you honestly whether it makes sense for your model and needs, and we won't install it where the official firmware is enough.
