When a router fails, the whole family or the whole office loses the internet: calls, online lessons, tills and cameras all stop. A router runs around the clock for years, often in a cramped, unventilated niche, powered from a mains supply where voltage spikes are a regular occurrence. It's no surprise that sooner or later it starts to misbehave. We quickly work out what's wrong and get you back online — by repairing or replacing it.
Why routers fail
The power adapter. The most common cause: a cheap external adapter gradually loses capacity, so the router reboots or won't start at all. Power surges and storms. A spike through the mains or the provider's cable burns out the WAN port or the power circuits. Overheating. A router in a closed cabinet or under the TV runs hot constantly, and its capacitors and chips degrade. Firmware failure. A bad update, or a power cut during an update, turns the router into a "brick" with blinking lights.
It's important to understand that not every fault is worth repairing. Fixing the board of an inexpensive router often costs more than a new one. We always compare the options and recommend whatever is better value for you.
Typical symptoms
- the router won't power on and no lights come on;
- all the lights are on or flashing together, but there's no network;
- the internet works over cable but Wi-Fi doesn't appear;
- the router restarts by itself several times a day;
- the WAN port or one of the LAN ports doesn't work;
- the case gets very hot or gives off a smell;
- the settings page won't open or the password is forgotten.
How we repair a router
- Line check. We confirm the problem really is the router and not the provider's cable or their side of the connection.
- Power check. We test the adapter under load and replace it on the spot if it's faulty.
- Port and radio diagnostics. We test WAN, LAN and Wi-Fi on both bands.
- Firmware recovery. We revive routers after a failed update using the emergency recovery mode.
- Hardware repair — replacing swollen capacitors or connectors, when it makes economic sense.
- Configuration. We restore the provider connection and Wi-Fi with the same name and password so every device reconnects automatically.
If a repair isn't worth it, we'll suggest a suitable replacement, bring it and set it up with the same network name and password — so you won't have to reconnect your TVs, cameras and smart devices.
How to make your router last longer
After the repair we'll explain how to avoid a repeat: placing the router somewhere with natural ventilation and connecting it through a surge protector or a small UPS, which also keeps the internet running through short power cuts. For houses where the provider's cable arrives overhead, we recommend line surge protection — it costs far less than a new router and computer.
