A local network is infrastructure, like electricity or plumbing. It's installed once and used for years. When it's done properly, a new employee simply plugs a laptop into the socket on their desk and starts work, cameras and tills don't depend on the whims of Wi-Fi, and any fault can be traced in minutes. When it isn't, the office spends years surrounded by extension leads, dangling wires and mysterious dropouts.
Why the network should be designed up front
The most expensive mistake is installing the network as you go. Once the renovation is finished, adding cable means new trunking on the walls or damage to the finish. That's why we start with a design: how many workstations there are now and in two or three years, where printers, the meeting room, a kitchen TV, cameras, access points, tills and terminals will go. We build in spare sockets and ports, which cost very little during installation and save a lot later.
The second key principle is centralisation. Every cable runs back to one point — a network cabinet or wall rack with a patch panel, switch, router and UPS. Every line is labelled, so you can see which socket in which room connects to which port. That's what structured cabling means.
What installation includes
- a network design showing sockets, cable routes and equipment;
- solid copper Cat 5e/6 cable run in trunking, ducts, ceilings or walls;
- network sockets at every workstation;
- a network cabinet or rack with patch panels and cable management;
- switches, router and UPS installed;
- ceiling Wi-Fi access points powered over Ethernet (PoE);
- lines for IP cameras, tills, card terminals and IP phones;
- testing of every line plus as-built documentation.
Stages of the work
- Site visit and survey. We look at the space, floor plan, finishes and where the provider's line and the electrical panel are.
- Design and quote. We prepare a network diagram and the full cost of materials, equipment and labour.
- Cabling installation. We lay the cable routes and fit sockets and the cabinet, keeping the required distance from mains cables.
- Termination and labelling. Each line is connected to the patch panel and its socket and clearly labelled.
- Testing. Every line is checked with a tester and the results recorded.
- Active equipment and configuration. We install switches and the router and configure the network, Wi-Fi and segmentation.
- Handover. You receive the diagram, port map and passwords.
If the premises are still being renovated, we coordinate routes with the electricians and builders so the cables are hidden in walls and ceilings, leaving only neat sockets on view.
