A laptop's cooling system works very differently from a desktop's. Instead of a large cooler there's a small fan and a thin copper heatsink whose fins are a fraction of a millimetre thick. Air is drawn in from underneath — often straight off a sofa, a blanket or your lap — and pushed through a narrow grille. Right at the entrance to the heatsink, within 8–12 months, a dense mat of dust and lint forms that blocks almost all the airflow.
Why cleaning a laptop matters so much
When the heatsink is clogged, the laptop's CPU and graphics chip heat up to 90–100 °C. The laptop throttles aggressively, which is why games and programs start to lag. The fan runs flat out and howls. The keyboard area and base become hot — unpleasant for you and bad for the battery, since lithium-ion cells lose capacity faster when they're constantly warm. In the worst case, overheating causes the graphics chip to detach from the board or the power circuitry to fail, and that means an expensive motherboard repair.
Unlike a desktop tower, a laptop can't be cleaned properly through the vents. Blowing air in from outside shifts some dust, but the mat on the heatsink stays put and sometimes packs down even tighter. A real clean means opening the chassis right down to the cooling system.
Signs your laptop needs cleaning
- the fan is constantly loud, even when just browsing;
- the case is hot and only a weak stream of hot air leaves the vent;
- the laptop slows down or freezes a while after starting;
- games stutter where they used to run smoothly;
- the laptop suddenly shuts down under load;
- it hasn't been cleaned for more than a year.
How we clean a laptop
- Measurements. We check CPU and GPU temperatures under load so we can compare the result afterwards.
- Disassembly. We remove the bottom cover or, on some models, the keyboard and top case, using plastic tools to protect the clips, and disconnect the battery.
- Removing the cooling system. We take out the heatsink with its heat pipes and the fan.
- Cleaning. We remove the dust mat from the fins, clean the fan blades and housing and blow out the inside of the chassis.
- Fan lubrication where needed, or replacement if the bearing is worn.
- Thermal paste and pads. New paste on the CPU and graphics chip, and fresh pads on memory chips and power circuitry.
- Reassembly and testing. We reassemble with the correct screw torque and check temperatures and noise.
Typical results are temperatures 15–25 °C lower and noticeably quieter operation. Cleaning takes 1–2 hours and, for many models, can be done at your home.
Model-specific details
Gaming laptops (Asus ROG, MSI, Lenovo Legion, Acer Predator) usually have two fans and several heatsinks, so servicing them takes longer and needs more care. Ultrabooks and MacBooks have compact cooling, and opening them requires special tools and caution around glued parts. We know the quirks of popular models and choose the thermal interface for each specific laptop.
