Local network faults often seem mysterious: everything works for one colleague but not another; the network flies in the morning and crawls after lunch; the printer appears and disappears. Problems like these eat up time and patience for years, while staff get used to the office's "quirks". We find the real cause and fix it, so the network simply works.
Why network faults are hard to find
Dozens of devices run on an office network at once, and a fault in one can affect everyone. A failing switch port, an accidental loop made by a cable plugged into the network at both ends, a second DHCP server, a router someone brought from home, a damaged cable behind a cabinet, an overloaded cheap switch, or a malware-infected PC flooding the network — all of these produce similar symptoms. Without the right tools and experience, people spend days hunting for them by trial and error.
We use cable testers, traffic analysers and monitoring tools that show what's really happening on the network. That lets us find the cause in hours rather than weeks.
What clients come to us with
- the network drops out on all or some computers from time to time;
- shared folders won't open — "network path not found";
- not every computer can see the network printer or scanner;
- IP address conflict warnings;
- the network slows down sharply at certain times;
- 1C or other accounting software is very slow over the network;
- the VPN for remote staff doesn't work;
- wall sockets stopped working after furniture moves or renovation.
How we find and fix the problem
- Gathering symptoms. We find out when and for whom the problem occurs and what has changed on the network recently.
- Physical layer. We test cables and sockets, switch ports, status lights and interface errors.
- Traffic analysis. We look for loops, broadcast storms, rogue DHCP servers and devices generating suspicious traffic.
- Configuration. We check addressing, DNS, access rights and router and switch settings.
- The fix. We replace damaged cables and faulty equipment, correct settings and remove malware.
- Prevention. We give recommendations and, where useful, set up monitoring so problems are spotted before users notice them.
One of our most common finds is a loop created by a cable accidentally plugged into a switch or two wall sockets at both ends. It can bring an entire office network to a standstill and is very hard to find without proper tools.
Managed network support
Rather than waiting for the next outage, many of our clients move to managed support: we check equipment and cabling regularly, update firmware, keep an eye on backups and respond to problems as a priority. For a business, that costs less than losing even a single working day.
