Freezing is one of the most frustrating faults. The cursor stops moving, windows stop responding, the audio gets stuck on one note, and all you can do is hold down the power button. Sometimes the computer locks up after a couple of minutes, sometimes once a week. The key thing to understand is that freezing is a symptom, not the illness. Behind it may be a harmless software conflict — or a dying hard drive holding your documents.
Why regular freezes are dangerous
Every forced shutdown with the power button stresses the system. Windows can't close files properly, and over time system components, program databases and sometimes your own documents become corrupted. If the drive is the cause, each freeze may mean it is trying and failing to read a damaged area. Carrying on like that risks losing data beyond recovery.
For a business, freezes also mean direct losses: unsaved documents, dropped calls, a till that stops mid-sale. So it's better to deal with the problem straight away rather than wait until the computer won't start at all.
What it usually looks like
- the computer locks up completely, ignoring mouse and keyboard;
- short hangs of a few seconds before it carries on;
- freezes in games, while watching video or in the browser;
- it freezes a set time after being switched on;
- the drive light stays on while the system barely responds;
- audio sticks or crackles during a freeze.
Main causes
The drive. An old HDD with bad sectors or an SSD near the end of its life is the most common cause. Overheating. A dust-clogged heatsink and dried thermal paste force the CPU to throttle sharply. RAM — not enough of it, or a faulty module. Malware and hidden miners loading the system. Software conflicts, an overloaded startup list and bad drivers. An unstable power supply that sags under load.
How we fix freezing
- Questions and observation. We find out when and during what the problem occurs and try to reproduce it.
- Drive check. We analyse S.M.A.R.T., response times and unreadable sectors. If your data is at risk, we back it up immediately.
- Temperature monitoring. We watch how the CPU and graphics card behave under load.
- Memory and power tests. We rule out hardware faults.
- Software. We scan for malware, clean up startup, update drivers and repair system files.
- Fix and verify. We replace the faulty part or repair the system, then confirm stability under prolonged load.
For older computers with a hard drive, the most effective fix is upgrading to an SSD. Including system transfer it takes about an hour, and the speed gain is immediately obvious.
