Games Crashing to the Desktop: Why It Happens and How to Find the Cause

Games crashing to the desktop

There's nothing more frustrating than a game crashing to the desktop at the decisive moment of a match, or after an hour of play with no save. A game may close without any message, "freeze" with the picture stuck, throw DirectX errors or even restart the computer. The causes can be software or hardware, and the important thing is not to guess but to rule them out one by one. Let's look at what most often causes crashes.

Software causes

The graphics driver

The most common cause. New games need fresh drivers — and sometimes, the other way round, a fresh driver has bugs and the previous version is more stable. Problems also arise after a "dirty" update, where a new driver is installed over the old one with leftover settings.

Damaged game files

A failure during download or update, or disk errors, can damage files. Steam, Epic and other launchers let you verify file integrity — one of the first checks to make.

Overlays and background programs

Overlays from Discord, Steam, screen recorders, FPS monitors and RGB lighting software sometimes clash with games and cause crashes, especially with anti-cheat systems.

Anti-cheat

Modern anti-cheat systems run at the system kernel level and conflict with some drivers, overclocking tools, virtualisation or an outdated Windows. Sometimes the game simply closes without explanation.

Not enough RAM or page file

Modern games need 16 GB of memory. With 8 GB and the page file switched off "for speed", the game crashes as soon as memory runs out.

Pirated versions

Cracked games often crash because of modified files and incompatibility with updates, and they contain malicious code too.

Hardware causes

Overheating

A graphics card or processor clogged with dust or with dried-out thermal paste overheats under load. The protection either slows it down or shuts the system off. If the computer crashes or restarts after 10–30 minutes of play, overheating is the first suspect.

The power supply

A weak, old or poor-quality power supply can't cope with the peak loads of a modern graphics card. The typical symptom is the computer switching off or restarting instantly in demanding scenes.

Overclocking and memory profiles

An overclocked processor or graphics card, or an enabled XMP/EXPO profile for the RAM, can be unstable — especially with certain combinations of boards and modules. The system copes with ordinary tasks but crashes in games.

Faulty memory or graphics card

Memory errors show up as crashes in various games and programs and as blue screens. A faulty graphics card shows artefacts, flickering and driver crashes.

The drive

A worn HDD or an SSD with errors damages game files and causes freezes while levels load.

How to identify the cause

  • Only one game crashes — more likely a software cause: files, settings, anti-cheat or the driver.
  • All demanding games crash — more likely the hardware: overheating, power, memory or overclocking.
  • The computer switches off completely — power or overheating.
  • A blue screen — a driver or hardware; the error code points the way.

A specialist analyses the error logs and crash dumps, runs stress tests on the graphics card, processor and memory, and monitors temperatures and voltages under load.

What not to do

Don't blindly apply "FPS boost tweaks", switch off the page file, remove system components or overclock the computer following videos from the internet. That often adds instability rather than removing it.

When upgrading a graphics card, remember that it's part of a system. A powerful new card in an older computer often needs a better power supply and sometimes improved case airflow too. Planning the upgrade as a whole avoids exactly the kind of mysterious crashes that send so many gamers to us.

What our technician does

  1. Analyses logs, crash dumps and error codes to decide where to look.
  2. Performs a clean install of a suitable graphics driver.
  3. Runs stress tests and checks temperatures, memory and power.
  4. Cleans the cooling system, replaces thermal paste and sets stable memory settings.
  5. Recommends a power supply replacement or an upgrade if the hardware can't cope.

A real example

A schoolboy in Gldani complained that every new game crashed after 15–20 minutes and that sometimes the computer restarted completely. His parents had already reinstalled Windows twice. Our technician ran a stress test: under graphics load the computer switched off. It turned out that after buying a new graphics card they'd kept the old no-name 450 W power supply. On top of that, the processor cooler was clogged with dust. We fitted a quality power supply of the right capacity, cleaned the cooling system and replaced the thermal paste. Games now run for hours without crashing, and the processor temperature dropped by 20 degrees.

Before buying, we can check whether your power supply and case can handle the model you have in mind, and suggest what to look out for.
