When buying a laptop or a Windows licence, many people face the question: Home or Pro? And online you'll also come across Enterprise, Education, LTSC, "Pro for Workstations" — and modified "builds" with the editions mixed up. Let's look at how the Windows editions differ in practice, which features really matter, and what to choose for the home, the office and special-purpose equipment.
Windows Home
The basic edition installed on most home laptops and computers. It has everything you need for day-to-day use: a browser, office programs, games, Windows Defender, device encryption (on supported hardware) and family accounts. Home is perfectly suited to home use and study.
Home's limitations: no full BitLocker with manual management, no incoming connections via the built-in Remote Desktop (you can connect to other computers), no Group Policy, no joining a corporate domain, and no Hyper-V or Windows Sandbox. On top of that, Windows 11 Home insists more firmly on a Microsoft account during setup.
Windows Pro
The edition for professionals and small businesses. It includes everything in Home, plus:
- BitLocker — full drive encryption, including external drives, with key management.
- Remote Desktop — you can connect to the computer from the office or from home.
- Group Policy — fine-grained control of restrictions, updates and security.
- Domain and Microsoft Entra ID join — central management within an organisation.
- Hyper-V and Windows Sandbox — running virtual machines and safely testing suspicious programs.
- Update management — the ability to defer updates to keep work software stable.
For the office, Pro is the standard choice. At home it makes sense if you need remote access, virtual machines or finer control.
Enterprise and Education
Corporate editions with extra security and management tools. They're distributed only through corporate and education licensing programmes, not at retail. If someone offers you an "Enterprise key" for a small sum, it's almost certainly an illegally resold corporate key.
LTSC — the long-term servicing version
LTSC (Long-Term Servicing Channel) is a special version of Windows Enterprise that receives only security updates, no new features, and is supported for many years. It has no Microsoft Store and lacks many built-in apps. It's designed for equipment that must run for years without changes: till terminals, medical devices, machine tools, CCTV systems and information kiosks.
LTSC is popular in modified builds as "light Windows with no extras". But it's legally available only to organisations under volume licensing, and for an ordinary user its drawbacks — no store, problems with some games and programs, limited support for new hardware — often outweigh the benefits.
How to find out your edition
The edition is shown in the system settings under "About". You can also see there whether the system is activated. If Pro was installed on a laptop that came with Home without buying a licence, the system will be unactivated — the key in the firmware fits only Home.
How to move legally from Home to Pro
An upgrade from Home to Pro can be bought in the Microsoft Store or as a separate key from an authorised seller. When you enter the Pro key, the system upgrades without reinstalling and all programs and files are kept. Importantly, an in-place upgrade needs a legitimate key — otherwise the activation will be revoked after a while.
What to choose
- Home, study, gaming — Home is enough.
- Freelancing, remote work, valuable data — Pro, for BitLocker and remote access.
- An office with several staff — Pro, with a common update and security policy.
- Tills, machine tools, CCTV — LTSC under a volume licence, or Pro with deferred updates.
A common mistake: a "build" of unknown edition
We often find computers that should have Home according to their paperwork but are running a Pro or LTSC "build" with an activator. That's both a licence violation and a security risk. The right fix is to install the original edition that matches the licence and, if needed, legally buy the upgrade to Pro.
The difference in price between Home and Pro is modest compared with the cost of a single data leak or a lost laptop with unencrypted client files. For anyone who earns money on their computer, Pro is usually a small and sensible investment rather than an extra.

A real example
A small clinic in Saburtalo wanted a doctor to be able to connect to his work computer from home. All the computers turned out to have Windows Home with keys in the firmware, and one was running a pirated LTSC build. Our technician bought official Pro upgrades for the two computers that needed them, upgraded them without reinstalling, set up secure remote access via VPN with two-factor sign-in, and turned on BitLocker with the keys held by the clinic's director. The computer with the build was reinstalled with genuine Windows and a legitimate licence.
