In Tbilisi, messengers are the main way people communicate: with family abroad, with friends, clients, suppliers and couriers. Many small business owners run their entire business through WhatsApp and Telegram: orders, approvals, product photos, delivery addresses. Yet few people know exactly how a messenger stores all this. Until the phone is smashed, stolen or swapped for a new one — and it turns out WhatsApp chats didn't restore, photos vanished from Viber and secret chats disappeared from Telegram. Each messenger has its own logic, and it's important to understand it in advance.
WhatsApp: everything is stored on the phone
WhatsApp keeps chat history on the phone itself, not on its servers. If the phone is lost and there's no backup, the chats can't be recovered — WhatsApp simply doesn't have them. Backups go to the cloud: Google Drive on Android, iCloud on iPhone. A backup is made on a schedule, usually daily if enabled in settings, and only if there's enough cloud space.
- Video in the backup. By default, video is often left out of the backup, so it's missing after a restore.
- Encrypted backup. WhatsApp offers to encrypt the backup with a password or key. If the password is forgotten, nobody can open the backup, including WhatsApp.
- Switching platforms. A Google Drive backup won't restore on an iPhone, and an iCloud backup won't restore on Android. Moving chats uses the official chat transfer procedure, which needs both phones to hand.
- Phone number. The backup is tied to the number and the cloud account. If you change number, use the change-number feature within WhatsApp itself.
Telegram: the cloud, but not everything
Ordinary Telegram chats are stored on its servers and are available on any device once you sign in. So if you lose your phone, your chats are usually preserved — as long as you can get into your account. But there are nuances:
- Secret chats exist only on a specific device and disappear for good if it's lost.
- Account deletion for inactivity. If you don't use Telegram for longer than the set period, the account and all its chats are deleted automatically. The period can be changed in settings.
- Account access. Without access to your phone number, and with a forgotten cloud password switched on, it may be impossible to sign in.
- Media in the cache. Photos and videos are stored in the cloud, but if the sender deletes them or a channel disappears, they're gone. Important files are worth saving separately.
Viber: backup if you choose
Like WhatsApp, Viber keeps history on the device, with backups going to Google Drive or iCloud. In many versions, media files are only partly included in the backup or need a separate setting. If backup isn't switched on, chats don't move when you change phones.
Work conversations
If business runs through a messenger, the chats are effectively part of your records: agreed prices, order confirmations, photos of defects, addresses. Losing them can lead to disputes with clients. Businesses should use messengers' business versions, regularly export important chats and keep key agreements in email or a CRM — not only in a messenger on an employee's personal phone.
How not to lose your chats
- Turn on daily backups in WhatsApp and Viber and check the date of the last backup.
- Include video in the backup if it matters, and watch your cloud space.
- If backup encryption is on, store the password or key safely.
- In Telegram, set the inactivity period, a cloud password and a recovery email for it.
- Save important files and documents from chats separately — to the cloud or a computer.
- When changing phones, move your chats while the old phone still works.
What our technician does
- Checks the backup settings in all your messengers.
- Frees up cloud space or helps choose a plan so that backups are made.
- Moves chats to a new phone, including between Android and iPhone.
- Helps restore account access and chats from available backups.
- Sets up saving of important media and documents separately from the messenger.
A real example
The owner of a small flower shop in Temka took orders via WhatsApp. Her phone fell in water and wouldn't switch on. It turned out the backup went only to Google Drive and was last made four months earlier: the cloud was full of photos. We restored WhatsApp from that backup on a new phone, and found some of the missing orders in the chats on a computer where WhatsApp Web was open. We then freed up cloud space, turned on daily backups including video, installed WhatsApp Business and set up exporting of order photos to a separate folder on the shop's computer.
Security deserves a mention too. Scammers often try to hijack messenger accounts by asking for an SMS code while posing as support staff, a courier or an acquaintance. Once in, they read your chats and send requests for money in your name. The protection is simple: turn on two-step verification with a PIN in WhatsApp and a cloud password in Telegram, and never give anyone your confirmation codes.
