Repair Your Laptop or Buy a New One: How to Decide Without Wasting Money

Repair or replace a laptop?

When a laptop breaks, its owner faces a question: repair it or buy a new one? Shops nudge you towards buying, the internet is full of contradictory advice, and friends say "just get a new one". But the right answer depends on the specific situation: what's broken, how old the laptop is, what class it is and what you use it for. As a service, we have an interest in an honest assessment — a client we talked out of a pointless repair comes back to us with a new laptop for setup and maintenance.

The main criterion: repair cost versus replacement cost

A simple practical rule: if the repair costs less than 30–40% of a comparable new laptop and the old one will fully handle your work afterwards, repair usually pays. If the repair costs half the price of a new one or more, seriously consider replacing it. And compare with a laptop of a comparable class, not the cheapest new one: a three-year-old business laptop is often better than a new budget model — sturdier, with a better screen and keyboard.

Faults that are almost always worth repairing

  • A worn battery. Replacing it restores battery life for a small fraction of the price of a new laptop.
  • Overheating and noise. A clean and new thermal paste restore normal operation and extend the life of every component.
  • Slowness caused by a hard drive. An SSD often turns a sluggish laptop into a fast one.
  • Not enough memory — if there's a free slot.
  • A broken power jack, hinges or keyboard. Mechanical faults that can be fixed at a reasonable cost.
  • Software problems: viruses, a system crash, slow Windows — solved without replacing hardware.
  • A cracked screen on a mid-range or high-end laptop — usually cheaper than replacing the whole device.

Faults that call for careful thought

  • Serious motherboard damage — a failed graphics chip in an old laptop, for example. Repair is possible but may cost a large share of a new laptop's price, and the warranty on such a repair is limited.
  • An extensive spill damaging the board, keyboard and screen at once.
  • Several serious faults at the same time in an old budget laptop: screen, battery, hinges and drive.
  • No parts available for a rare or very old model.

Age and performance

Even if the repair is cheap, what matters is whether the laptop will cope with your work for a few more years. A five-year-old mid-range laptop with an SSD and more memory is usually perfectly good for documents, email, video calls and study. But for modern games, 4K video editing or heavy engineering software it may no longer be enough, and there's no point investing large sums in it. Also check whether the system still gets security updates: very old laptops may not support current versions of Windows.

Data and time

Sometimes a repair pays even if it costs as much as a new laptop — when the device holds critical data with no backup and repairing the board is the way to get it back. In other cases speed matters more: if you need the laptop for work tomorrow and the part will take two weeks, the temporary or permanent solution is a new device with your data transferred from the old one.

The hidden costs of a new laptop

Buying a new laptop isn't just its price. You need to transfer your data, install and set up programs, restore licences and get used to a new keyboard and system. If the new laptop is a budget model, it may need upgrading in a couple of years. Factor these costs into the comparison.

The environmental side

E-waste is a serious problem, and Georgia's recycling system is still developing. Extending a laptop's life by two or three years through repair and upgrades is a sensible choice environmentally too. And if the laptop is replaced, the old one can be sold for parts, refurbished for a child's schoolwork or an elderly relative, or properly recycled — always after securely wiping the data.

How we help you decide

  1. We diagnose the laptop and give you the exact repair cost before any work starts.
  2. We assess the laptop's overall condition: are there other problems about to surface?
  3. We compare the repair cost with current prices for comparable laptops.
  4. If a repair isn't worthwhile, we tell you honestly and help you choose a new laptop.
  5. We transfer data, programs and settings from the old laptop to the new one and securely wipe the old one.

A real example

In one week, two clients came to us with similar complaints: the laptop wouldn't switch on. The first was a four-year-old business laptop: the power jack and a component in the charging circuit had failed. The repair cost about a tenth of the price of a comparable new laptop, and it works perfectly now. The second was an eight-year-old budget laptop after a spill: the board, keyboard and panel were damaged, and the hard drive already had errors. Repairing it would have cost more than a new inexpensive laptop with an SSD. We rescued the data from the old drive, helped choose a new laptop and transferred everything to it, including email and bookmarks.
