The MacBook Battery: How to Judge Wear, When to Replace It and Why It Isn't a Five-Minute Job

The MacBook battery: wear and replacement

One of the MacBook's biggest strengths is its long battery life. So when it lasts three or four hours instead of a full working day and "Service Recommended" appears in the settings, owners start to worry. Battery wear is inevitable — it's a consumable part — but how fast it happens depends a lot on how the laptop is used. And replacing a MacBook battery is harder than on most laptops and calls for care.

How to check the battery's condition

macOS shows battery health in the battery settings. There you'll see maximum capacity as a percentage of the original and a status: "Normal" or "Service Recommended". More detail — the cycle count and the current and design capacity — is in the system information. One cycle is a full 100% discharge, even if it happens in parts: two 50% discharges, for example.

Modern MacBook batteries are rated for about 1,000 cycles, after which they retain roughly 80% of their original capacity. Older models were rated for 300–500 cycles. When capacity falls below 80%, the system usually shows a service recommendation.

What speeds up wear

Heat

The lithium-ion battery's main enemy is heat. A MacBook used in a hot flat in summer, left in the sun or in a car, or used on a bed with its vents blocked wears its battery noticeably faster. The combination of heat and constant charging is especially harmful.

Sitting at 100%

A battery kept fully charged for months ages faster. That's why macOS has Optimised Battery Charging: the system learns your routine and holds the charge at 80%, topping up to 100% close to when you usually unplug. It's worth keeping it on.

Deep discharges

Regularly running the battery down to zero and shutdown also speeds up wear. Storing a MacBook fully discharged for a long time is risky: the battery can enter a deep discharge state and refuse to charge.

Non-original chargers

Poor-quality power adapters and USB-C cables can deliver unstable voltage, which harms both the battery and the charging circuit.

Signs the battery needs replacing

  • Capacity below 80% and a "Service Recommended" status.
  • The MacBook shuts down at 10–30% charge or suddenly under load.
  • The charge level jumps: 40% one moment, 15% a minute later.
  • Performance drops on battery — the system limits it to prevent shutdowns.
  • The case bulges, the trackpad is stiff or "clicks by itself", the lid doesn't close flush.

The last point matters most: these are signs of a swollen battery. A swollen battery presses on the trackpad, keyboard and case, can damage them and is a fire risk. If you notice these signs, stop charging the MacBook and see a technician as soon as possible.

Why replacing a MacBook battery is difficult

In most modern MacBooks the battery isn't just screwed in; it's glued to the case with strong adhesive, and on some models to the top case together with the keyboard. To remove it, the adhesive has to be carefully softened and the cells separated without damaging them. A damaged lithium-ion cell can catch fire, so bending or puncturing it is unacceptable. Newer models use special pull tabs, but even with them the job demands precision.

There are also many fragile ribbon cables inside a MacBook, and the trackpad and speakers often sit directly above or beside the battery. Careless disassembly can damage them. After replacement, the new battery must be connected correctly and tested, and its information updated in the system.

Original or compatible battery?

Original Apple batteries are the best option for quality and compatibility, but they cost more and you have to wait for them in Georgia. There are good compatible batteries from reputable makers, but the market is also full of cheap fakes with inflated capacity ratings, no protection circuits and short lives. Sometimes, when a non-original battery is fitted, macOS shows a message that the battery's authenticity can't be verified — that affects how health is displayed, not how the battery works. A technician will recommend the best option for your model and budget.

How to extend battery life

Keep Optimised Battery Charging switched on. Don't leave the MacBook in the sun or a hot car. Work on a hard surface, not a duvet. Don't store the laptop fully discharged or fully charged for long periods — around 50% is best for long-term storage. Use original or good-quality certified chargers. On models with a fan, keep the cooling system clean.

What our technician does

  1. Checks the battery's condition, cycle count and real capacity.
  2. Rules out other causes of fast drain: background processes, a faulty charging circuit.
  3. Sources an original or good-quality compatible battery.
  4. Safely removes the old battery, including glued-in and swollen ones.
  5. Fits the new one, checks charging, the trackpad and the case, and sends the old battery for recycling.

A real example

A lecturer in Vake noticed that the trackpad on his MacBook Air had become hard to click and the lid no longer closed flush. The battery settings showed wear, but he hadn't thought much of it. On inspection the battery had swollen and was already deforming the bottom cover, and the trackpad was raised. We safely removed the swollen battery, fitted a new one, checked the trackpad — it was undamaged — and straightened the bottom cover. It turned out the MacBook had spent years on charge in a room that got very hot in summer, with Optimised Battery Charging switched off. It's back on now.
