Asus is one of the laptop market leaders and particularly strong in gaming. In Georgia the affordable VivoBooks for study and home, slim ZenBooks, and the TUF Gaming and ROG gaming lines are all popular. These series differ widely in design and therefore in their typical problems. We repair Asus laptops regularly and have collected the most common cases — so you can spot the signs early and prevent a serious breakdown.
Asus's series at a glance
VivoBook — mass-market laptops for home and study. Attractive prices, but often soldered memory, small SSDs and compact cooling.
ZenBook — slim, light premium models, often with OLED screens, soldered memory and glued-in batteries.
TUF Gaming — affordable gaming laptops with an emphasis on durability and performance.
ROG (Republic of Gamers) — flagship gaming models, often using liquid metal as the thermal interface, with powerful components.
Gaming models overheating
TUF and ROG gaming laptops produce a lot of heat, and their cooling systems, powerful as they are, clog quickly with dust and pet hair. After a year of heavy gaming, temperatures rise noticeably, the fans get loud and game performance drops. Some ROG models use liquid metal instead of thermal paste on the processor — it's more effective, but such a system must be serviced with particular care: a drop of metal on the board causes a short circuit. Taking these laptops apart yourself is risky.
Soldered memory and small drives
Many VivoBook and ZenBook models have soldered RAM — 8 GB with no way to expand, sometimes with a free slot for an extra module. After a couple of years users notice they're running short. Budget configurations also often ship with 256 GB SSDs that fill up quickly. Many models allow the drive to be swapped for a larger one or a second drive to be added — it's worth checking for your specific model.
Hinges and case
Some slim models and budget lines have hinge-mount problems: the plastic or thin metal around the mounts cracks, the lid starts creaking and the case separates near the hinge. As with other brands, it's best to fix it straight away, before the display cable and panel are affected.
Battery and charge modes
The MyAsus utility has a battery care mode that caps the charge at, say, 60% or 80%. Owners who don't know about it complain the laptop "won't charge fully". That's a setting, not a fault. And if the feature is off and the laptop is always on charge in a hot room, the battery wears faster. In slim models a swollen battery shows up as a raised touchpad and a bulging bottom.
Manufacturer utilities
Asus uses MyAsus for ordinary models and Armoury Crate for gaming ones. They control performance and fan modes, keyboard lighting, the charge limit and graphics switching. After a Windows reinstall without them, the laptop may run in a sub-optimal mode: noisy, overheating or not delivering full performance. Sometimes the utilities themselves misbehave after an update and need reinstalling.
OLED screens
Many ZenBooks and VivoBooks have OLED screens with excellent contrast and colour. It's important to understand OLED's quirks: showing static elements at maximum brightness for long periods can cause image retention. Asus includes protective features in the system — don't switch them off. Replacing an OLED panel costs more than an ordinary IPS one.
Keyboard
On many models the keyboard is built into the top case together with the battery or backlight, so replacing it after a spill is a complex job. In gaming models with RGB lighting, individual lighting zones failing can be down to the keyboard or to the utility.
How to make an Asus laptop last
- Have gaming models serviced by a technician every year, especially if they use liquid metal.
- Turn on battery care mode in MyAsus if the laptop is almost always plugged in.
- When buying, choose a configuration with enough memory — it often can't be expanded.
- Don't do without MyAsus and Armoury Crate after reinstalling the system — install them again.
- On OLED screens, use the protective features and dark themes.
What our technician does
- Diagnoses Asus laptops of every series, including liquid-metal ROG models.
- Cleans the cooling and replaces the thermal interface and pads.
- Adds memory where there's a slot, and replaces or adds drives.
- Restores hinges and cases and replaces batteries, keyboards and screens.
- Installs and configures MyAsus and Armoury Crate and the performance and battery modes.
A real example
A student from Varketili brought in an ROG gaming laptop that within six months had started overheating and shutting down in games. He'd watched a cleaning video online and decided to do it himself, replacing what he thought was thermal paste. In fact the processor used liquid metal, and after he took it apart some of it had spread beyond the die. Fortunately the laptop hadn't been switched on since: we carefully removed the stray metal from the board, checked the components for damage, applied a new thermal interface correctly with the surrounding components insulated, and replaced the thermal pads. In-game temperatures fell by 15 degrees, and the board was unharmed.
