MacBook or Windows Laptop: Which to Choose for Work, Study and Home in Tbilisi

MacBook or a Windows laptop

The "Mac or Windows" debate has run for decades, and there's plenty of emotion about it online. In practice, though, the choice comes down to a simple question: what tasks will you do, which software do you need, and how much are you prepared to spend — not just on the purchase but on upkeep. We repair both MacBooks and Windows laptops, so we see the strengths and weaknesses of both — including ones the adverts don't mention.

The main difference is the ecosystem, not the hardware

A MacBook is a laptop where Apple controls everything: the processor, the operating system and much of the software. Hence its main advantages: tight optimisation, long battery life, quiet operation, excellent screens and build quality. Windows laptops are made by dozens of manufacturers — from very budget to premium and gaming. Hence Windows' main advantage: an enormous choice of models for every task and budget, and compatibility with practically any software.

Performance and battery life

Modern MacBooks with Apple's own processors combine high performance with low power consumption. In practice, even a thin MacBook can run all day on battery while staying quiet and cool, yet handle video editing, photo work and programming quickly. There are energy-efficient Windows laptops too, but the range is huge: an inexpensive laptop may last three or four hours on a charge, and a gaming one even less.

On the other hand, if you need maximum performance in 3D, games or engineering software, or work that relies on a powerful graphics card, Windows laptops with discrete graphics offer more options for the same money.

Software is the deciding factor

Before you choose, list the programs you work with. Many popular applications — browsers, office suites, messengers, Adobe software, development tools — exist on both systems. But there are important exceptions.

  • Accounting and government services. A number of specialised accounting programs, tax and banking clients, and electronic-signature tools run only on Windows or run on a Mac with limitations.
  • Engineering and architecture software. Some CAD and calculation programs exist only for Windows.
  • Games. Most modern games are released for Windows. The selection on Mac is much smaller.
  • Video, photo, music, design. The Mac is traditionally strong here, and some professional editing and audio software exists only on Mac.

If even one critical program doesn't run on one of the systems, the choice is effectively made for you.

Convenience and habit

Switching from Windows to Mac or vice versa takes time to get used to: different keyboard shortcuts, a different logic for files and windows. If you have an iPhone, a Mac offers a handy pairing: a shared clipboard, calls and messages from the laptop, quick file transfer. If you have an Android phone, integration with Windows exists too, but works somewhat differently.

Repairability and maintenance

This is often overlooked when buying — and it shouldn't be. In modern MacBooks the memory and storage are soldered to the motherboard: you can't increase them after purchase, and if the storage fails, recovering data is much harder. The battery is glued in and many components are integrated. Original MacBook parts are expensive, and in Georgia their delivery sometimes takes time. MacBook motherboard repair requires experience and specialised equipment.

Windows laptops vary widely: on many models you can replace or add memory, fit a second drive, and swap the battery or keyboard relatively easily. Parts for popular models are more accessible. That said, more and more Windows laptops are also thin designs with soldered memory and glued-in components.

Cost of ownership

A MacBook costs more up front but holds its resale value well and usually receives system updates for many years. A Windows laptop can be bought at any price point, but budget models date faster. When choosing a MacBook, it's important to buy a configuration with enough memory and storage from the start — you can't expand it later. When choosing a Windows laptop, check whether memory and storage can be added in the future.

Security

The popular belief that Macs don't get viruses is a myth. There are fewer threats for macOS, but phishing, malicious browser extensions and scam software exist there too. Windows is a more frequent target because of its popularity, but with sensible setup, updates and built-in protection both systems are secure enough. What matters most is user behaviour.

Who each suits

A MacBook — for video, photo, design and music work, for programmers, for anyone who values long battery life, silence and screen quality, for iPhone owners and for those who want a laptop that "just works" for many years.

A Windows laptop — for accounting and specialised software, for gaming, engineering and 3D work, for those who want the widest choice of prices and the option to upgrade, and for users who are used to Windows.

A real example

A small-business owner in Vake bought a MacBook on his friends' advice and contacted us a week later: his accounting program and the banking client he used to send payment orders only ran on Windows. There were several options, and we went through them together. In the end we set up a solution on the MacBook for running the Windows programs he needed, checked that the banking client and electronic signature worked correctly, and transferred all his data from the old computer. Our advice for the future: always list your essential programs before you buy.
